safely get rid of rust in a refinished tub?

August 30th, 2010
*** asked:

We just had our bathtub reglazed a couple of months ago and we are starting to get some rust around the drain. What is a product that is safe to use (besides CLR) that will work? I can get some of it off with scrubbing bubbles, but not all of it. The guy who did our tub gave us explicit warnings not to use anything abrasive, because it will ruin the finish. No bleach, ammonia, or anything citrus. Thanks for the help.

How do I refinish a fiberglass bathtub?

August 26th, 2010
jsa1962jsa asked:

I have an older fiberglass bathtub/surround combo and the bottom surface is covered with micro cracking or crazing. The cracks are just large enough to pick up trace dirt and looks unclean. I hate to replace the tub, as much for the extensive labor in fitting a new one in as for the cost. Is there an overcoat that I can apply that will restore the original finish, or some method of buffing it out that won’t go beyond the outer layer and into the fiberglass? The problem is really limited to the bottom and up about 2 inches on the sides.

The bathtub coating seems to have become detached?

August 22nd, 2010
Critter loves thumbs downs asked:

I rent an apartment and I’ve been here for almost 3 years. During that time there has been no work on the bathtub, and I assume it hasn’t had any maintenance for a while.

Recently, I noticed a chip in the enamel coating, and it was sort of bubbling up, like it was detaching from the tub itself. The other day when I went to clean the tub, I pulled up the bathmat and a whole section of the coating came with it. I just contacted my landlady to tell her the tub needs to be refinished, but I’m wondering:

Is this a normal thing that happens eventually with bathtubs? Shouldn’t it fall under “regular wear and tear”? We didn’t do anything harsh to the tub. I’ve always kept up on cleaning and whatnot, it looks like the coating just separated from the tub itself.

Thank you!

Does anyone have experience with having their tub refinished?

August 15th, 2010
Alyssha S asked:

My bathtub is an awful pink color but it fits well in my small bathroom and it is cast iron. I would like to have it refinished but a friend of mine told me that if I refinished it in white, it would start to chip off and look awful. Has anyone had experience with this?

we own a rental home that needs its bathtub replaced. Before we bought the property, the previous owner?

August 7th, 2010
723 asked:

painted over the existing ceramic tub and now it is peeling!! there are renters currently in the home and that is the only bathroom. so trying to refinish / remove the paint isn’t really an option, for it takes several days before they can use the tub due to the fumes, far as we call tell through our own limited research.

we are looking at a tub liner / insert. what is the approximate cost & time actually involved in this type of project? home depot is the company we use because we have a credit card thru them, which we use primarily for home necessities & keeping costs separated

Thanks!

Can I paint my bathtub?

July 31st, 2010
MehMeh asked:

My bathtub is really old and discolored and I can’t afford to refinish it right now, let alone replace it. I seem to remember reading somewhere that you’re not supposed to paint a bathtub, but the one in my best friend’s apartment definitely appears to be painted. It’s a clean tub but it doesn’t FEEL clean. Can I just paint it over with waterproof paint, or is there maybe a special finishing technique I need to know? Thanks!
Great answers, thanks for the input everyone! If I do my research and take my time, I see no reason I shouldn’t do this project myself. I can’t afford $350 because there are a million little problems in my house and it’s just $50 here and $500 there, and I can’t wait to get rich to fix things up. I’m intelligent, creative, and able-bodied, why not?! Anyway, it feels good to enjoy the fruits of your own labor. :)

Bathroom Pics with Yellow Tub?

July 23rd, 2010
JohnHancock asked:

Hi folks,

I’ve got a 70’s mustard yellow bathtub (and toilet and sink). I’m about to redo the bathroom. I was going to refinish the tub and replace the toilet and sink, but before I do I was wondering if anyone knows of a site with pics of a nice bathroom that has a yellow tub. I want to see if I can make it work.

I plan to replace (possibly tile) the shower surround, tile the floor, paint the walls, and replace the vanity. Also possibly replace the toilet and sink. So, the design scheme is open. But I need pics to see what I like.

The rest of the house is very calming, New England, and classic. It’s a 1910 New England Colonial. I would want to keep with this design scheme (and don’t want to introduce a 70’s retro scheme).

Thanks!
