How do I refinish a bathtub?
March 21st, 2010 | by admin |moira77 asked:
I recently moved into a house that was refinished, but they apparently forgot to finish the bathtubs. They are matte, not slick and shiny and they have some stains and rough patches. I think they’re so gross I don’t even want to take a bath in them! I’ve seen people painting bathtubs on tv shows, but Lowe’s said they didn’t have bathtub paint. Do I need to call plumber or someone else to have this done? I’m willing to pay someone else to do it or do it myself, just need to know what’s involvwed or who I should call. Thanks!

Bath Fitter
Custom-molded acrylic bathtub liners that fit over old tubs.
Bath Fitter near you -
This is like a skin that fits over your tub but do a little research because I’ve heard good and bad reports on the process.

First: What is the surface: Knock on it. If the material is plastic it is either fiberglass or acrylic. If it’s a deep sound to the knock it’s porcelin cast iron. If it’s a hollow sound it’s enamel on metal.
Is it fiberglass? Call a local plumber - someone reputable. Most plumbers have fiberglass repair people on staff that can refinish fiberglass and if not they can refer you to someone that does.
Is it cast iron? Look in the yellow pages under bathtub refinishing. If it is cast iron you need to be sure to buy lots of tarp and tape off the room when he comes - sometimes they sand through the porcelin and it can be a very dusty project. There are kits the show on the home shows to paint cast iron - DON’T DO IT! You will be doing it again in a year and it’ll be worse.
Is it enamel? Rip it out or do the bath fitter or rebath. There is no point in repairing a cheap metal painted tub. You’ll waste lots of time and energy.
Hope this helps - Good luck.

you can but a kit from a paint store or hire a refinishing company but honestly speaking a tub liner is a longer lasting product if you professionally have it refinished you’ll get 5 years if your lucky
