How long should a bathtub and surround last?

Marysue asked:

If you installed a brand new bathtub and surround today, how long should it stay decent looking and useable?

We are looking to buy a home where these items will need to be replaced. My husband says he and his father can do this.

My objection is that these two replaced his mom’s about 15 years ago, and it looks pretty rough these days. I want to know if that’s a reasonable lifespan for these products or if these two gentlemen think their skills are better than they really are.

For fiberglass tubs they should last good 15 years if kept up and cleaned properly ceramic tile is another idea which should last as youll own the house.
