Removing 30 years of bathtub dirt?

carlottavaldez007 asked:

I recently moved into a very old building with a gorgeous tub. Unfortunately, the tub has not been cleaned in, well, ever.
I’ve tried Ajax and elbow grease, bleach, lemon juice, vinegar, and even Magic Eraser. The Magic Eraser worked for a little while, but takes far too much effort. I can’t resurface the tub, because I rent. Any suggestions?

Wouldn’t it be worth it to put a bit of effort into it? i would prefer to put effort into it instead of finding “easy solutions” that you may not be able to find.

If it is truly ingrained, there is not much you can do about it, bleach should have cleared the stains.

Spray it with oven cleaner. The lye will dissolve the scum.

Put the magic eraser on the end of a bolt or something on the end of a cordless drill…..corded might work better, higher speed……A cheap wire wheel on the end of the drill, with the magic eraser glued to it might help..or a shammy cloth… just don’t use the wire wheel alone. Steel wool might work too….but it might “cut” too deep….Or a dish pan scrub pad…or a 3M pad.

The water let some fresh air in then take the inside that should at least help.

There is a product called Kaboom which comes in a spray or as a scrub. I recommend both. You spray or rub it on, wait about 5 minutes and then go to town with a sponge or plastic sponge to scrub it off. You might have to do this twice. Rinse very well. If it is too far gone, you may have to have it reconditioned.
