Thankfully, bathing has been around for a while, though it wasn’t always a daily part of life. Bathing apparatuses were found as far back as on the Isle of Crete, where they found a foot long basin made out of hardened pottery. The concept of bathing must not have stuck, because it wasn’t until hundreds of years later that Romans adapted the idea into daily practices, which at the time meant bathing in public basins throughout the towns. Now, thousands of years later the practice has become widespread, with people appreciating the act as not only a cleansing ritual, but a relaxing and spiritual process. Along with many advances in our culture since those days, bathing has also come quite a long way from the days of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance.

The first basin was found in Crete, and was created from hardened pottery and its length was around 5 feet and resembled today’s pedestal tub. It is believed that today’s classic clawfoot bathtubs originated from this model. Of course today’s are a bit more advanced, offering such amenities as jets that create a tunnel of air, creating a massage like sensation, as well as the walk in tub. The walk in version is ideal for elderly parents or a home with children. The door simply opens up into the tub, allowing the bather to walk right in, as opposed to stepping up and over on a wet surface. It’s a safer option.

With so many choices out there, it’s a wonder people ever decide on a particular style outside of the normal white standard tub. But for those who do decide to venture outside of the box, then there are beautiful pieces that will complement and finish your dream bathroom. Of course, the whirlpool bath is a great option for those looking for massaging jets and a spa like experience, but for those who appreciate timeless beauty and antique style, then there’s another option for you. They’re called footed bath tubs. Originally they were used specifically for the most lavish, extravagant homes to signify stature and position in society. Thankfully, they were blessed by the advances of technology, making them affordable for the everyday household. This type of tub was originally made strictly out of cast iron, and was extremely heavy. Today’s tubs can also be made out of acrylic or fiberglass, making it much easier to maneuver.

With all of these choices, take your time and find your style. Bathing is something we spend a lot of our time doing, so it deserves a good amount of consideration to ensure you get the right clawfoot, walk in, or whirlpool tub for your home!
